CLEANING IQOS

Does the IQOS ILUMA need cleaning? The maintenance guide that keeps the taste perfect

The IQOS ILUMA is the induction-heated device that promises zero maintenance. No metal blade, no cleaning sticks – which sounds excellent. It is true, but an occasional clean of the heating chamber is still worth it: it brings the full flavour back.

Does the IQOS ILUMA need cleaning? The maintenance guide that keeps the taste perfect

Why people say the ILUMA needs no cleaning

The IQOS ILUMA uses the SMARTCORE INDUCTION system – inside every TEREA stick there is a tiny heating element activated by an induction coil in the holder. Unlike the older models (IQOS 3 DUO, IQOS 3) there is no metal blade to collect ash and tar residue.

Philip Morris therefore states that the device requires no maintenance. Finish the stick, pull it out, throw it away, carry on with the next one.

But: even without combustion, glycerine and nicotine vapour gradually condenses on the walls of the heating chamber. Over time those deposits change the taste – sticks start to taste flat or slightly bitter.

When it is time to clean

  • Weaker taste – TEREA tastes flat, as if the stick had less aroma.
  • Changed taste – draws taste less clean, with an off or bitter note.

Cleaning the heating chamber step by step

You will need: a cleaning stick (an old one from a previous IQOS is fine), isopropyl alcohol or vodka (at least 40 %), and optionally a little cotton wool.

  1. Switch the device off and remove the TEREA stick.
  2. Wind a small amount of cotton onto the stick – a thin layer, so it still fits into the chamber.
  3. Dip the cotton in alcohol – it dissolves deposits well and evaporates quickly.
  4. Insert the stick gently and wipe the walls with a circular motion. Do not press hard.
  5. Pull the stick out – if the cotton is badly soiled, replace it and repeat.
  6. Let the chamber dry for 5 to 10 minutes; the alcohol evaporates on its own.
  7. Only once the chamber is completely dry, insert a new stick.

What to clean with

  • Isopropyl alcohol – ideal, evaporates fast and leaves no smell.
  • Vodka – also works, but can leave a faint odour.
  • Never water – it can reach the electronics and cause a short circuit.
  • Never aggressive solvents (acetone, petrol) – they damage the plastic parts.

How often? Preventive care

  • Every 50 to 100 sticks – roughly once a month with daily use.
  • Whenever you change flavour – moving from tobacco to menthol or LEVIA otherwise leaves mixed odours.
  • As soon as taste quality drops – then clean straight away.

Cleaning takes under five minutes and restores the original taste of the sticks.

Look after the charger and battery too

  • Charger contacts – wipe them occasionally with a dry cloth.
  • Holder contacts – often covered in hand sweat, which is why the holder sometimes does not start charging immediately.
  • Store it dry – moisture is the enemy of electronics.
  • Keep it out of direct sun – heat permanently reduces battery capacity.
  • Charge regularly – never let the battery run completely flat.

If cleaning does not help

  1. Reset to factory settings – hold the button for about 10 seconds.
  2. Check the charger – the holder may not be charging properly.
  3. Contact support – through iqos.com for your market or an IQOS store. Use the warranty; that is what it is for.
