In terms of hardware, ILUMA i is identical to ILUMA: an electromagnetic coil heats the metal insert inside the TEREA stick. No blade penetrates the tobacco, no residue forms, and the user never has to clean the holder. ILUMA i adds a software layer:
- Touchscreen – shows battery status, remaining number of puffs, and device status
- Flex Puff – the device monitors the user's puffing rhythm and adjusts the heating curve in real time
- Pause Mode – allows pausing a started stick and returning to it later
- FlexBattery – power management that optimizes battery life based on usage patterns
The practical result: an experience that is more device-driven than manual. The user inserts a stick, the device takes over. One stick lasts roughly six minutes or 14 puffs; a charged holder allows two consecutive uses, but with gentler use, even three in a row (determined automatically by Flex Puff) before placing it in the charger.
The path of smart devices
The display and adaptive features borrow directly from consumer electronics design. Autostart removes the "press and wait" step familiar to users of older IQOS devices. But Flex Puff is the most interesting: instead of a fixed temperature profile, the device adapts to whether the user takes long, slow draws or short, quick ones. The same principle of adaptive control used by modern chargers or laptops.
Pause Mode addresses a real-world scenario that no heated tobacco device has handled well before: with ILUMA i, the user can pause usage and finish the same stick after a break.
What remains the same
SMARTCORE induction heating is still the main technical advantage and a high patent barrier for competitors. The TEREA stick is sealed on both sides with a metal insert inside; because nothing penetrates the tobacco, there is no clogging, residue, or cleaning. This remains the strongest argument for the ILUMA platform compared to blade-based solutions.
Broader context
ILUMA i pushes heated tobacco further into the territory of "smart devices." The segment started as a simple heating tool, added consistent induction heating, and now adds a display, adaptive logic, and pause. This trajectory - from appliance to smart device - is the same one the vaping category went through years ago. Hardware competition in heated tobacco is no longer about whether the device works. It is about how sophisticated and intelligent that experience is.
